Hi everyone!
Have you ever wondered about the incredible stories of people regaining the ability to walk just by thinking about it? Or the groundbreaking FDA-approved therapy that's revolutionizing the treatment of major depressive disorder? Well, get ready to dive into the fascinating world of neuromodulation with me!
I'm Aditi Doshi, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in Neuroscience at the University of Illinois Chicago. I'm thrilled to introduce you to the wonders of neuromodulation – a field that's changing lives one pulse at a time by fine-tuning the intricate messaging system in our bodies, addressing issues like persistent pain and irregular movements with a high-tech touch. Neuromodulation is like adjusting the brain or nervous system’s "volume" to improve function. It involves using mild electrical signals, magnetic fields, or chemicals to help nerves work better.
The Marvel of Thought-Controlled Walking
Picture this: a paralyzed man takes steps just by thinking. It's not science fiction; it's the reality of neuromodulation via a brain-computer interface plus spinal cord stimulation therapy developed by Onward Medical. At the heart of this innovation lies a brain implant that captures signals when the patient envisions performing a task. These signals embark on a journey, traveling to a computer snugly strapped to his back. Here, the computer works its magic, decoding the signals and orchestrating a transmission back to the spinal cord, unlocking the potential for movement. This medical breakthrough is rewriting the rules of spinal cord injury rehabilitation and proving that the power of the mind can indeed move mountains.

SAINT: A Beacon of Hope for Depression
But that's not all! Ever heard of SAINT? It's not a celestial being but an FDA-approved neuromodulation system. Developed by Magnus Medical, the Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy (SAINT) is a veritable game-changer in the treatment of major depressive disorder. Think of it as a superhero swooping in for the rescue, especially for adults who've faced frustration with traditional antidepressant medications. SAINT employs the power of non-invasive magnetic stimulation, precisely and individually targeting specific areas of the brain linked to depression. It's not just a therapy; it's a beacon of hope for those navigating the challenging landscape of mental health. In a world of breakthroughs, SAINT stands tall, offering a personalized and innovative approach to transforming lives.

Now, let's journey into the heart of neuromodulation.
Why Does Neuromodulation Matter Today?
So, why should you care about neuromodulation? Well, here are some key reasons:
Treatment of Chronic Conditions: From chronic pain to epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and psychiatric disorders, neuromodulation offers hope when traditional approaches fall short.
Minimally Invasive Interventions: Say goodbye to lengthy recoveries and hello to quicker healing. Neuromodulation techniques are often less invasive, ensuring better outcomes with fewer side effects.
Personalized Medicine: It's not one-size-fits-all. Neuromodulation targets specific neural circuits, making treatments more personalized and effective.
Reducing Reliance on Medications: Tired of side effects from medications? Neuromodulation gets to the root cause without the need for systemic drugs.
Why Isn't Neuromodulation Mainstream?
Great question! Despite its incredible potential and life-changing benefits, neuromodulation has yet to become a household term. I will unravel the reasons behind its relative obscurity in my following newsletter, which will be released on February 15th, 2024.
